The Philadelphia Health Corps (PHC) has long-standing partnerships with many community organizations in Philadelphia that have served as host sites for AmeriCorps members over the past thirteen years. PHC members add value to these host sites by helping them increase their capacity to deliver services, integrate health messages into their programs, and fulfill their mission of meeting community health needs.
PHC Members serve full-time for a 46-week period, usually September to July. Members conduct health education and health promotion activities, outreach, case management, and other supportive services intended to assist individuals and families in accessing health care and other related services. Members are selected based on their interest in healthcare and their readiness to develop professional skills. Some speak a second language. They all share a commitment to serving their community’s health care needs.
Host Sites benefit tremendously by hosting an AmeriCorps member, because the member can help them expand their resources, raise awareness of their organization’s presence in the community, and help deliver needed services to the organization’s clients. Organizations that serve as host sites contribute a cash match, plus the cost of a monthly transpass while the member is in service. This is a very cost effective way to have someone serving full-time for 46 weeks, promoting the organization and delivering needed services for their clients. Host sites also make an in-kind contribution in the form of appropriate supervision and mentoring of their member(s) by designating a supervisor who ensures member development, accountability, and completion of the program’s service objectives.
