On October 11th, AmeriCorps members from all over Pennsylvania came together in Philadelphia for the launch of a new AmeriCorps year, and to celebrate national service. The Philadelphia Health Corps was in attendance, as were a myriad of other AmeriCorps groups, including conservation crews from Western Pennsylvania, educators and mentors from the Philadelphia area, and those connected with social service organizations around the Commonwealth. Fittingly, the kickoff was held at the National Constitution Center, on Independence Mall. The HealthCorps had an opportunity to explore the various exhibits at the center, which included a “life-size” exhibit of a scene from the drafting of the US constitution. Ultimately, HealthCorps members were able to see how their dedication towards public service connected with the early history of the United States and with the ideas of the founding fathers, who sought to create a government of the people, by the people, and for the people.
